Civitavecchia luggage storage: where to leave your bags before or after your cruise

The question every cruiser asks at Civitavecchia

You have just stepped off your ship at the Port of Civitavecchia, your cabin is gone, and your flight from Fiumicino is not until 7 pm. Or the reverse: you have a late check-in for your cruise but your train from Rome arrives at 9 am. In both cases you are carrying suitcases through a port town in the Italian summer and you only want one thing — somewhere safe to leave them for a few hours.

It is one of the most common practical questions we hear from cruise passengers. The short answer is simple: there is no luggage storage inside the port terminal itself. The port authority has not activated an internal left-luggage service, so every workable solution sits just outside the harbour gates. The good news is that several reliable, inexpensive options are within a few minutes’ walk, and a private transfer lets you skip the whole problem entirely. Here is the complete guide.

First, a key fact: no luggage storage inside the port

The Port of Civitavecchia is large, modern and well organised, but it does not operate a left-luggage facility inside the cruise terminals (Bramante, Curia, Piero della Francesca or Amerigo Vespucci). Security rules for an active commercial port make unattended baggage impossible inside the perimeter. So whatever you read about “port terminal lockers”, treat it with caution: as of 2026, the only real storage is outside the harbour, within a short walk of the main exits.

Option 1 — Dedicated luggage-storage shops near the port

Two small, established businesses sit right at the port exits and exist specifically to solve this problem for cruisers. Both are locally run, guarded, and priced by the day.

Bar Navy — by Largo della Pace

Address: Via Tarquinia 33, Civitavecchia · Phone: +39 0766 732182
Hours: Monday–Saturday 05:00–20:00, Sunday 05:00–13:00
Price: €5 per item, per day, any size.
This is the closest option to the Largo della Pace service centre — the main cruise passenger meeting point and the terminus of the free port shuttle bus. It is roughly 100 metres from where the shuttle drops you, which makes it the most practical choice if you are arriving straight off the ship.

Seamenstop — by Varco Fortezza

Address: Viale Garibaldi 1, Civitavecchia · Phone: +39 0766 220138
Hours: Monday–Sunday 08:00–13:00 and 15:00–19:00
Price: €3 (small bag), €5 (standard, up to 23 kg), €7 (large, up to 32 kg).
Seamenstop sits next to the Varco Fortezza entrance, right in front of Michelangelo’s Fort. It is the better choice if your ship berths at the northern piers and you exit through the Fortezza gate.

Both shops open early enough for disembarking passengers and close late enough to collect bags before an evening departure. Hours can shift with the cruise season, so it is wise to confirm by phone on the day if you are sailing outside the summer peak.

Option 2 — App-based storage networks (Radical Storage, Bounce, Qeepl)

If you prefer to book ahead online, the major luggage-storage networks all cover Civitavecchia. They partner with cafes, newsagents and hotels near the port and let you reserve and pay through their app before you arrive.

  • Radical Storage — from about €3.90 per bag/day, several locations near the port, 24/7 options, €3,000 coverage included.
  • Bounce — from about €3.50 per bag/day, locations open roughly 08:30–22:00.
  • Qeepl — from about €4.39 per bag/day, around 11 partner points near the port, €1,000 coverage included.

These networks are ideal if you want a guaranteed reservation, a fixed price and a digital receipt. The trade-off: most partner points do not accept walk-ins or cash — you must book through the app first. If your ship is delayed and you arrive after a partner’s closing time, the dedicated shops in Option 1 are usually more flexible.

Option 3 — Leave your bags at your Civitavecchia hotel

If you are staying overnight in Civitavecchia the night before or after your cruise, almost every hotel and B&B in town will hold your luggage for the day at no charge — even after you have checked out. This is the simplest and cheapest option of all, and Civitavecchia’s hotels are mostly within a 10–15 minute walk of the port entrances. If you have not booked yet, choosing a hotel near Largo della Pace or the train station kills two birds with one stone: you can leave your bags and walk to the ship.

Option 4 — Store your bags in Rome for the day

Many cruisers prefer to spend their pre- or post-cruise day in Rome rather than in Civitavecchia. In that case it often makes more sense to leave the bags in Rome and travel light to the port. Roma Termini station has an official KiPoint left-luggage facility (Platform 24, daily 06:00–23:00, around €6 for the first 5 hours then €0.60/hour up to a daily cap), and the same app networks (Radical Storage, Bounce, Qeepl) cover Termini and the historic centre heavily. Drop the bags, see Rome, then take a direct private transfer to the ship — no dragging suitcases through the metro.

Option 5 — The zero-storage option: keep your bags in your private transfer

This is the option most of our passengers end up choosing, and it sidesteps the entire problem. If you book a private transfer between the port and your next destination — Fiumicino airport, Rome, Florence or your hotel — your bags simply travel with you in the vehicle. There is nothing to store, no queue, no closing time to chase, and no walk in the heat.

It works in both directions:

  • Disembarking: your driver meets you at the ship with a name sign, you load the bags and you are on your way immediately — to the airport, to a day in Rome, or to your hotel. No waiting for storage to open.
  • Embarking: your driver picks you up from the airport or Rome hotel at the time that suits you, stops wherever you want along the route, and drops you and your bags right at the ship. You never handle the luggage in Civitavecchia at all.

For a family with several large suitcases, or a group travelling together, the cost of the transfer is often comparable to paying per-bag storage for a full day — and you get door-to-ship comfort, air-conditioning and an English-speaking driver thrown in. A few practical tips

  • Label everything. A tag with your name, ship and mobile number is the difference between a smooth pick-up and a panic.
  • Keep documents and valuables with you. Passports, cruise cards, medication and electronics should stay in a small day-bag, not in stored luggage.
  • Check Sunday hours. Several options reduce hours on Sundays; Bar Navy opens but only until 13:00.
  • Mind the free port shuttle. The shuttle bus inside the port runs to match ship arrivals and departures — factor its timing into when you collect your bags.
  • Allow buffer time. If your storage closes at 19:00 and your ship sails at 20:30, collect by 18:00 to be safe.

The bottom line

Civitavecchia does not offer luggage storage inside the port, but it does not need to: a handful of inexpensive, well-run shops and app points sit just outside the gates, and a private transfer removes the question entirely. Plan one step ahead, and your cruise day starts — or ends — without a single suitcase in your hand.
