Departure from Rome–Fiumicino Airport “Leonardo da Vinci”, where a private chauffeur at your full disposal will take you on a tour of two stunning Umbrian towns: Assisi and Perugia. Umbria is the most inland region of central Italy. Washed by the Tiber and its tributaries, it is characterised by a painterly rolling landscape. The ancient Romans reached it via the Via Flaminia, which crossed the region from Narni to Foligno. Under Roman rule, beginning in 295 BC, Umbria enjoyed its first flourishing. From 568 to 1247 it was the seat of the Lombard duchy of Spoleto, but the region reached its greatest splendour in the communal and feudal ages. In the sixteenth century it became part of the Papal domains and remained so, aside from the Napoleonic interlude, until Italian unification. Umbrian territory is therefore closely linked with the history of Rome and traces of that past are everywhere to be found. You will travel the E45 motorway to Assisi, with the option to stop at a service station or local bar for a coffee break; the journey takes about 2 hours 40 minutes in total. Assisi is known worldwide for the memories of Saint Francis (1182–1226), patron of the city, of Italy and of several towns abroad, including San Francisco in the USA. The town still retains a strong mystic and religious atmosphere. People from all over the world come daily to pilgrimage to the tomb of the saint.
