The Transfers Rome chauffeur will be pleased to meet you at Termini station, Fiumicino Airport or the port of Civitavecchia to take you to your hotel or to begin the tour immediately. The Jewish Ghetto was instituted in 1555 by Pope Paul IV, who ordered all Roman Jews to reside in the Sant’Angelo quarter near Tiber Island. For many centuries members of the Jewish community suffered restrictions and segregation until 1870, with the breach of Porta Pia and the final abolition of the ghetto. In the early twentieth century the Great Synagogue of Rome was built, one of the largest in Europe, which you will visit during the tour. At the Jewish Museum of Rome you will trace the history of the ghetto through historical documents and precious artefacts. You will stroll the old lanes of the Ghetto and see the Church of Sant’Angelo in Pescheria. In Piazza Mattei you will find the splendid Turtle Fountain (1581). You may lunch in one of the characteristic restaurants serving Roman Jewish cuisine. In the afternoon, crossing the Fabricius Bridge, also called “Iudeorum”, you will reach Tiber Island.
